  1. Level 2 - Infer why Anderson uses "When he spits, I bet Rachel/Rachelle catches it in a cup and saves it." (Anderson 149) to describe how much Rachel likes Andy instead of just saying "Rachel really likes Andy"
Level 3 - Predict why you think Melinda decided to warn Rachel about Andy after how mean Rachel is to her? Do you think Rachel will take Melinda's advise?

    1. @ Ashlyn's level 2 question: I think that she wanted to use this saying instead because it dose still get the same point across but this way you can get a picture in your heard and it makes you think about what the author is trying to say. The entire book would be extremely less interesting if it had no literary devises.

    2. @Ashlyn's level 3: Melinda decided to warn he because she hated her expirience so much that she doesn't want any one to go through it and doesn't want andy to be able to do it again. because rachel is a nasty snobby type of person I dont think she will take melinda's advice.

  2. level 2: On pg. 141 it talks about the cheer for basketball forced the PTA's hand to say we are no lounger the hornets, but the student council counter acted the proposal by saying " It describes the psychological harm we have all suffered from this years lack of identity" (Andrews 141). Do you think the student council had a valid point even considering the cheer that the PTA heard?
level 3: If you were to trade places with Melinda right after she found out that she had to give her report about women's suffrage one which you felt you did an amazing job on how would you react; would you do the same thing that Melinda did or would you suck it up?

    1. @grace level 3:I would probably gather up all my courage and give an amazing report just to show that teacher that I could. He probably only made her give an oral report because he doesn't like her.

I think they're being dumb. They don't really care about the name at all, if they didn't have to be there the wouldn't. so no I dont think they have a valid point

    1. Hey Zoƫ! I'm going to respond to your Level 3:
I think that Melinda and David are going to tolerate each other enough to be friends, but it's difficult to tell. David is definitely not an open book. I know this because I remember a part of the boom where they say his smile was like one you give anxiously to an aggressive dog (or something like that). On a personal level, I think they're adorable together!!! By the way, I love your hashtag. :)

  5. Level 2: What do you think the phrase "farmers who grow rocks and poison ivy." (Anderson 147) means?
Level 3: On page 143 when Melinda says, "Sit, Mellie. Nobody has patted me on the head, though." do you think she wants attention? For someone to tell her that she did a good job? Or she just said that as a metaphor?

  6. Level 2: Analyze the way Melinda first speaks to Ivy. Why is she so apprehensive towards someone she already knows?

Level 3: Why do you the Melinda's high school changes their mascot so often?

Response to zoe level 2: I think that Andy is a player so he defiantly is just doing this to take advantage of rachel. Or maybe he was trying to get attention from Melinda by dating her frienemy.

  7. Level 2: How does a mental-health day help Melinda?
Level 3: Melinda feels safe alone in her closet. It's her space to call her own. Why are spaces to call your own necessary or important? Why is it important to feel and be safe, rather than just being safe?

    1. Melinda is an introvert. Introverts need a safe, quiet place to recharge after being around people. You see, psychologically introverts are easily stimulated by external stimuli and need a quiet, not distracting space to feel calm. Extroverts are under stimulated and therefore take more risks and socialize more to feel balanced. Introverts need their own undisturbed space to feel balanced.
On Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, safety is on the second row right above physiological needs. Feeling safe is important because if you don't feel safe some of the time you start to breakdown mentally.

  8. Level 2: Compare Mr. Neck to the traditional realistic antagonist archetype.

Level 3: Imagine if you we're Melinda. Would you try and protect Rachel? Why or why not?

    1. Response to your level 3 question: If I was Melinda I would definitely try to protect Rachel. What Melinda went through was horrible and I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone, even if they weren't my friend anymore.

  9. Lvl 2- Why do you think the author put Melinda admitting to herself that she was raped was put in the middle of the book? What pushed Melinda to think about it and persevere on with life?

Lvl 3- Defend Mr. Neck's reasoning for throwing Melinda out of class for not speaking in her presentation. "The suffragettes fought for the right to speak. They were attacked ,arrested, and thrown in jail for daring to do what they wanted. Like they were, I am willing to stand up for what I believe. No one should be forced to give speeches. I choose to stay silent." (Anderson 156) What might have been ironic about her presentation?

-aissa @ashlyn in response to your level 3 question.......

Melinda probably feels guilty enough to warn Rachel about Andy. In some way, it is the right thing to do. Since they are not friends (anymore), it may seem weird to some that Melinda would do Rachel a favor. Regardless, Rachel is a person she has cared about for a long time in her past and probably doesn't want Rachel to go through what she has been through. For Melinda, this is a chance to show people the truth about Andy, that he is a pervert and should be locked up in jail. I predict that Rachel will not take Melinda's advise since they haven't been friends for a long time it would look like Melinda is trying to sabotage her relationship. How can you trust an enemy?

  10. @Hannah level 2

I think Melinda starts off her conversation with Ivy a little apprehensive because Melinda isn't really a social person. Melinda has seen ivy in art class and honestly seems a little jealous of Ivy's work. Ivy is very supportive towards Melinda in the beginning of the conversation and I think that gives Melinda the courage to stay around. I was kind of awkward for them both when they were eating the Life Savers, but it really showed friendship when Ivy started to help Melinda. Melinda was trying to be a perfectionist but Ivy taught her to just go with it. To "be the tree" as Mr. Freeman would say. I think this was a foreshadow for a bug event coming up in the book and Ivy will play a huge role.

  11. Level two question:When Melinda revealed what really happened at the party, what was your reaction? Did you predict this to happen, or did suspect something else?

Level three question: Put yourself in Rachel/Rachelle's shoes. You really, really like this boy who's nice to you, and you think that you have a good relationship with him. Your friend who you don't really like keeps trying to warn you that he's dangerous. What would you do in that situation? Would you listen, or not listen because you don't like your friend even though she may be right?

@Jenna response to your level three question: If I was in Melinda's position, I would try to protect Rachel. Even though we aren't friends, I still wouldn't want what happened to me to happen to her. I would try my best to convince her, but if she still doesn't budge, I would back off and let her make her own choices as an independent person.

  12. Level II: Infer what the author means by "Little rabbit heart leaps out of my chest and scampers across the paper, leaving bloody footprints on my roots."
Level III: If you were in David's place how would you react to Melinda getting MISS for her report?
